Once a year New York's Javits Convention Center becomes the center of the toy universe. Toy Fair, the oldest toy fair in the world and one of the United States's oldest trade shows, has been a gathering place for toy stores, toy makers, and the media since 1903. It is at this event that most of the toy trends for the year are decided. There are several fully packed floors of toys ranging from classic wooden blocks to app controlled drones to Star Wars action figures. The show runs for 4 days and it really does take nearly that long to see all of the awesome toys. You can see from this video by The Toy Insider just how crazy Toy Fair can be!
Among the hundreds of toy companies we are especially looking forward to seeing a few that have piqued our interest.
Feel Flux: There is a new toy called Feel Flux that is going to be at Toy Fair and I can’t wait to try it out. From the videos it looks like a lot of fun and it is the first toy ever to be based on a rare phenomenon called Lenz’s Law. It definitely looks like it should be experienced in real life in order to truly get a “feel” for it.
This physics-based toy, designed and manufactured in Hungary, is made up of a strong magnet ball and a conductive metal tube. When you drop the ball in the cylinder it moves very, very slowly through the tube. From the videos it almost looks like the ball is slowly sinking into a pool of Jello. Based off of that phenomenon then there are tricks and games that can be performed. It really looks like a lot of fun! They will be in booth #4519.
MeeperBots: Many toys are trying to integrate technology and coding with a physical toy but MeeperBOTS are one of the most successful. These toys are a app controlled car that you can add Legos or Mega Bloks to. Imagine all of the awesome remote controlled cars you can build or jousting tournaments with Lego knights, or build a motor home for your pet mouse! There are so many awesome things that could be built with MeeperBOTS.
For Toy Fair they are hoping to have a major update for their app available. The update will be looking to improve upon the functionality of the BOT Code portion of the app specifically, and to make it possible for users to control exactly how much the BOT will turn based off of angles. So instead of basic turns or spins it will be possible for users to select a specific angle for each turn. This will make it easier for users to complete obstacle courses with their meeperBOTs so we’ll definitely be looking out for that! They will be located in booth #2050 at Toy Fair.
Boy Story: We’re excited to see the end production of Boy Story dolls. We met them at the ASTRA Toy Show where they had a working prototype on hand and since that time now they have been selling the dolls to happy customers all across the country. Boy Story action dolls are dolls that are great for pretend play and adventures. The shelves at toy stores have always been flooded with pink dolls targeted at girls but very few boy dolls. Boy Story helps to remedy that with their high quality boy dolls. They will be at booth #4530, in the Launchpad section of Toy Fair.
Funko: Our neighbors just 30 miles north, Funko have been making fun stuff for a while. They specialize in making really cute collectables and you probably know them from their Pop! Vinyl line. The exciting thing to see with Funko is what new pop culture references they will be tapping into. Whatever interests you have there is likely a Funko doll that fits that interest. They have Back to the Future dolls, Harry Potter dolls, NFL dolls, and ones from nearly every popular TV show. And they are all super cute! They will be at booth #5305 at Toy Fair.
Fort Boards: Well, we’re excited to be at Toy Fair so we’re really looking forward to seeing our stuff there (We might be biased). Fort Boards will be at booth #1953 and we are hoping to stand out by showcasing our unique ability to BUILD BIG. We’ll be using a lot of our fort building kits to make a giant castle in our 10 foot by 10 foot space. We feel lucky to be a part of a building toy renaissance of sorts. Toys like Lego, Magformers, K'Nex, Fort Boards, YOXO, and Tegu are giving children the tools to freely express their creativity and learn important STEM concepts all the while. We will be at booth #1953 at Toy Fair.
